Jenny Conelly is 74. She still lives alone, still makes her own coffee, still walks to the bakery on Tuesdays. What changed is smaller and crueler: she pays a bill twice, forgets whether she took the morning pill, loses the thread of a day. "It's not just the memory loss," she told us, "it's the stress of not trusting my own mind anymore." Research with elders in her situation kept surfacing the same pattern: most already owned a smartphone, but the apps made for them were made about them: dashboards for the family, trackers for the doctor, alarms for everyone except Jenny. Caregiving apps had turned the elder into the object of the product instead of its user.

I designed Relay around the constraints that kill the obvious solutions. Reminders that repeat become noise she learns to dismiss. Interfaces with five options become five chances to feel lost. And any feature that reads as surveillance gets the phone left in a drawer. Relay is Jenny's app first: her granddaughter Monica gets a companion view.

Key Decisions

One thing at a time. The home screen is a card carousel: the single next activity, full-width, with a photo and one button. Rejected: the classic scrollable task list. The cost: less "overview". Monica sees the full day; Jenny only ever faces what's next.

Ask, never nag. The mood check-in is one tap on a face, and skipping it is a first-class action with zero guilt attached. Rejected: streaks, scores, and "you haven't logged today" pushes. The cost: sparser data, but data Jenny volunteers is worth more than data she resents.

Help, not surveillance. Safe zones and Find My Way Home exist for Jenny, framed as help she can call on. When she leaves a zone, the alert rings in her circle's phones.

Ask Elli instead of an FAQ. Questions go to a voice-first assistant that answers in plain speech, and family instructions arrive as short videos of familiar faces.
